How to Tell Stories: The Three Shapes

Kurt Vonnegut was a renowned author and literary genius. When it came to story telling, he felt there were only three types of stories we love to share: 


1. Problem solving story. A problem is encountered. A solution is created and problem is solved by the end. [BLUE]

2. The boy meets girl story. Something exciting happens to you, you lose it but eventually gain it back. [RED]

3. The Cinderella story. You start in the lowest circumstances imaginable. Things get better and better until you reach the pinnacle of your potential success. Something happens, causing you plummet. The lessons learned from the experience; either help you get back up or render you emotionally content with who you've become. [GREEN] 

From our cave painting beginnings, to medieval times, to the industrial and information age; these are the main types of stories we have been telling and retelling. This is essential for anyone looking to tell a good story, build a great brand, create rapport or successfully market a product.
